Bamburi Cement Ltd was one of the first organisations to recognise the impact of HIV/AIDS to the workforce and community as a whole, and has had a Workplace HIV/AIDS awareness program in place since 1992.

This awareness program has involved the families of employees, the adjacent nursery and primary schools, other sister companies and the surrounding community.

Over the years the awareness has been in the form of:

• Peer Education activities;
• Folk media festivals;
• Condom use demonstration and condom distribution network(s);
• Video shows;
• Group discussions and lectures;
• Song, drama and puppetry.
• Pamphlets, brochures, posters, stickers (Car & Helmet) and T-shirts with messages.
• Free Sexually Transmitted Infections management at the Staff Clinic.
• Free counselling services at the Staff Clinic.

As a service to the community, Bamburi holds Medical Camps in the Mombasa area. As many Kenyans live below the poverty line and therefore cannot afford any proper & decent form of medical care. A medical camp provides even just for a day a high standard of health care by qualified professionals who volunteer to give free service and using donated medications and materials. Both curative, preventive and promotive services will be provided in a medical camp.

The MCH/FP clinic at the Bamburi Cement Ltd Staff Clinic was started in late 1993. We were assisted by Family Planning Private Sector (FPPS) to set up the MCH/FP services with the understanding that members of the surrounding community would be allowed to use these services.

At the Child Welfare Clinic, children's health is supervised through the road to health chart, immunizations given (Tuberculosis, Polio, Diphtheria, Whooping Cough, Tetanus, Measles, Influenza, Hepatitis B & MMR) and nutrition education provided.

Both at the Antenatal and Postnatal Clinic, pregnant mothers are followed up to ensure that they deliver normal healthy babies and they themselves remain healthy. Mothers are followed up to teach them on baby care and also counsel them on family planning. The Family Planning Clinic caters for where the mothers are counselled on the various methods of family planning that are available before making an informed choice on which to use.
